Rhinoplasty
The nose dominates the center of the face. It’s hard not to notice it. For this reason, it needs to be harmonious! But how often does that happen? The nose significantly influences an individual's overall appearance more than any other facial feature. While it often goes unnoticed, a pronounced deformity can detract from even the most beautiful face. Rhinoplasty offers the solution by restoring the size, shape, and symmetry of the nose. Rhinoplasty is one of the most sought-after cosmetic procedures worldwide, and rightly so, as it improves both the appearance and self-confidence of those who choose it.
Rhinoplasty restores the size and shape of the nose is defined. It can be done for aesthetic and functional reasons. The purpose of the operation is to correct or construct a nose in proportion to the rest of the facial features and according to patients' wishes.
WHAT ARE THE OPTIONS?
Depending on the needs of the patient, open or closed rhinoplasty can be performed with or without restoration of the nasal septal defect (NSD). The correct pre-operative assessment of the patient (especially checking for a functional nasal valve and the possible existence of a nasal septum comment) and understanding his expectations are of catalytic importance for the success of the operation.
In aesthetic rhinoplasty, the tip of the nose is restored, the pubic hair of the back is reduced and the dimensions of the cheeks and the back come into harmony with the rest of the face. The operation can be performed with the help of cartilage grafts taken from the nose or elsewhere, in order to give the desired shape to the nose. The wound is closed with absorbable sutures, the nasal chambers are tamped with special gauze and a special splint is placed on the bridge of the nose, which is removed on the 7th day.
FOR WHO IS RHINOPLASTY FOR?
Rhinoplasty is indicated for all patients, aged between 17 and 65, without significant health problems, who believe that an area of their nose can be corrected. Patients should want surgery for their own reasons and not because someone from their environment "recommends" it or because they suffer from dysmorphic syndrome. People with difficulty breathing or a suspected comment on the nasal chart should be examined by an ENT. Surgery can be combined with straightening of the nasal septum.
WHAT IS THE TYPE OF ANESTHESIA?
Rhinoplasty is performed in an organized clinic with general anesthesia, it lasts 2-3 hours and the patient wakes up with gauze, inside the nose and a brace on the outside.
WHAT WILL THE SCARS BE LIKE AFTER RHINOPLASTY?
In the closed technique, the operation is performed without an incision in the skin but with small incisions inside the mucous membrane of the nose. In the open technique there is a small incision in the stylet. Each technique has specific indications and the doctor will explain to you which operation you are a candidate for. The incision of the open rhinoplasty is a few millimeters and very quickly it is difficult to detect. Patients who have a history of cheiloids will be put on a follow-up program.
WHAT WILL BE THE DURATION OF THE RESULTS?
The results are finalized after 3 months, due to the slow removal of the swelling, and after this time they are permanent. The patient should be aware of possible injuries to the nose in the first weeks after surgery and avoid wearing glasses.
WHAT ARE THE LIMITATIONS FOR RHINOPLASTY?
It is important to understand that rhinoplasty surgery should not be performed on patients with excessive demands or expectations. As an operation, it improves the appearance of the face but does not erase signs of aging.
WHAT ARE THE RISKS OF RHINOPLASTY?
The doctor will evaluate your general condition and your history and, if he decides that you are suitable for surgery, he will inform you about the possible complications and what needs to be done to reduce the possibility of their occurrence. You will also be asked to stop smoking and refrain from using supplements that affect blood clotting. The anesthesiologist will then talk to you about the type of anesthesia you will receive and the possible complications.
As a general rule, when the operation is performed by qualified plastic surgeons, complications are extremely rare and usually minor. It is very important that the patient follows the pre-operative and post-operative instructions and informs his doctor about everything that concerns him.
WHAT YOU SHOULD DO BEFORE THE OPERATION?
Depending on your age, you will be given instructions on the medications you may be taking and what you should take next, as well as the additional testing you may need to do based on your history. In case you have a history of chronic allergic rhinitis, polyps, Wagener's granulomatosis, hypertrophic inferior sinuses or nasal septum commentary you will need to be examined by an ENT.
The doctor will explain the value of smoking cessation and proper nutrition in wound healing. One week before the surgery you will be photographed and sign the consent form.
WHAT YOU SHOULD DO AFTER THE OPERATION?
When you leave the surgery you will have a special adhesive splint on the outside and gauze on the inside of the nose. You will have a feeling of tension and heaviness around the eyelids and nose from the developing swelling and pain that will be treated with common pain relievers. In the first few days, until the inner gauzes are removed, there will be an inability to breathe through the nose. You will leave the clinic the next day, but you will need to have an escort with you to get you home safely. Gauzes and sutures are removed on the 4th day and the splint on the 7th.
In the first hours after the operation, it is recommended to use ice patches, to avoid swelling and bleeding, artificial tears and eye ointment. You will need to take antibiotics for a week and if you wear glasses you will need to replace them with lenses for a month.
You stay in the clinic for one day, but the time away from work, due to the swelling and exudations around the eyelids, must have been calculated at 2 weeks. This does not mean that you will not be able to do light work much sooner, but in general you will be careful because the swelling and ecchymosis can easily worsen. You should avoid bending over, intense physical exertion and exposure to the sun. After the gauzes and splint are removed you will be given instructions for the scar, which is easily hidden and disappears within the next few months.
WHAT IS THE COST OF THE OPERATION?
The cost of rhinoplasty is calculated by adding the cost of the clinic, in which the patient is operated and treated, the fee of the Plastic Surgeon and the Anesthesiologist. The price varies in between 5000-8000euros.
