Rupture of Inserts
WHY THE INSERTS ARE CRACKED
Breast augmentation remains one of the most frequent plastic surgery procedures. The first silicone implants were released in 1960. Since then the technology surrounding their manufacture has evolved significantly. Today we use 5th generation silicone inserts with cohesive gel and stable shape. These devices are more secure and reliable than ever, but there is still a small chance of breakage. These chances increase by 1% for each year after using them.
The causative factors that may lead to rupture are not entirely clear. Among other things, the way they are made, how strong their shell is, the folding inside the capsule or technical errors by the surgeon are to blame.
HOW DOES RUPTURE OF INSERTS OCCUR
The patient, especially when wearing newer implants, may not immediately notice the rupture. Over time, minor or significant asymmetry appears, which should be investigated. The rupture is not accompanied by pain or redness. However, lymphadenopathy may occur in the corresponding armpit, with hard, swollen and painless lymph nodes.
Clinical examination by a Plastic Surgeon or Breast Surgeon is very important, but the diagnosis is confirmed by imaging and especially by MRI.
HOW TO DEAL WITH A POSSIBLE RUPTURE
Although ruptures are not urgent and dangerous situations for the patient's health, it is important to treat them without delay. The silicone released inside the capsule creates reactive tissue and aseptic inflammation, while the shape of the breast begins to change. Treatment depends on the patient's expectations. It is always recommended to remove the inserts, silicone granules and capsule. The replacement of the inserts is deemed necessary in the majority of cases. However, patients who have satisfactory breasts can easily increase their breast volumes further with lipotransfer.
